How to paint a portrait against the light

This week’s blog is from Charo of @charodelatorre_art where she teaches us how to paint a portrait using only two colors. You can find her previous blog posts here and here.

“I like to do this type of portrait with gouache because it is quite simple and fast.  They are also very realistic and beautiful.

The materials we will need are:
-Black and white gouaches
-Various size brushes
-Watercolor paper, I use black paper but if you don’t have it, you can paint the paper with black gouache.
-A colored pencil
-A reference image

 1. We start by drawing the image on the watercolor paper.  I like to delimit the different areas of color.

 2. With black and white gouache we prepare a mixture in intermediate gray and we begin to paint the areas that we had drawn at the beginning that correspond to that tone

 3. We do the same with a mixture of gray a little bit darker

 4. We prepare a light gray tone and finish filling in our drawing

5 We add details to give our drawing more realism. To finish with white gouache we are taking out the points of light where necessary

Tip: if when you are painting the gouache on your palette becomes too dry, you can spray it with a little water and you can continue painting with it.
