Heart lock with watercolor (step-by-step tutorial)

If you’re looking for some Valentine’s Day ideas, this one may be a great one to try. So arm yourself with brushes, and let’s get started. 

You will need: 

  • Watercolor Confections (Pastel Dreams)
  • Watercolor paper (Cold-pressed watercolor paper)
  • Round watercolor brushes (in size 8, 4 and 2)
  • Pencil
  • Masking tape (optional, to secure the watercolor paper)

Colors:

  • No. 40
  • No. 39
  • No. 42
  • No. 47
  • No. 46
  • No. 38

Sketching

Draw a light sketch with a pencil.

Step 1

Prepare color No. 40 in a medium consistency and paint the heart lock shape with a round brush (size 8). Let the painted layer to dry.

Step 2 

Take a brush (size 4) and paint the heart’s side with the color No. 39 in a thick consistency. Now, paint a layer of shadow using the color No. 39, as shown in the example. The paint consistency should be medium. Allow the illustration to dry. 

Step 3

Paint the lock’s details in colors No. 42 and No. 47. Let the painting to dry completely. 

Step 4

It’s time to add the final touches. Choose a small round brush (size 2), and paint details in the following colors: No. 38, No. 39, No. 46. All paints should be of medium consistency.
