“Hello color lovers! I’m Durga, a part-time watercolor illustrator and full-time mom to two little humans. We reside in a small town by the French countryside, surrounded by the beautiful Alpes, forests, and lakes. I go by the name watercolorpixie on Instagram and quite enjoy making cute, whimsical, illustrations of plants and animals.
I didn’t always do cute art. When I first began painting years ago, I was hooked onto hyper-realistic pencil portraits. There weren’t many videos or tutorials on the internet at that time, but I read every scrap bit of info that I could lay my hands on and worked mostly with graphite pencils. At around the same time, I was diagnosed with a rare neurological condition that caused extreme pain throughout my body and I could barely make one painting a year. It was shattering when doctors strictly advised me never to touch a pencil again.
During the months I was bedridden, I spent most of the time watching speed painting videos on youtube. This went on for about 10 years and it was frustrating to say the least. I knew I had to paint. Art was something that made me feel alive. I finally started working on finding my own ways/exercises to keep the pain at bay. And that’s when I discovered the magic of watercolors. Using the brush was far less strenuous than a pencil and I remember crying one night because I could finally, finally make art again.
The very next year, I was invited to be part of this wonderful team at Art Philosophy and there’s been no looking back ever since. Art Philosophy’s products, especially their creamy and vibrant watercolor confections and tubes were so fun to work with and brought the much-needed color I needed in my life. I transitioned from making hyper realistic, detailed drawings to more spontaneous, joyful, whimsical illustrations that brought out the inner child in me. And there has been no looking back ever since. I have sold a lot of my art around the world, worked on brand packaging designs and logos for businesses, made a couple of children’s illustrations for books and have also worked on custom nursery art for clients.
My art style continues to evolve with time and I am so honored to take this journey of growth and discovery with the loving and incredibly supportive Art Philosophy family.
I so believe that if you believe in yourself and follow your heart, your dreams will chase you! “
Love and rainbows, Durga
